Clan Wars are organized wars between two clans of equal strengths

The two clans are matched up by doing a WAR SEARCH at which time the computer will begin the matchup process.

Clans are given a numerical value which is based on what we call BASE WEIGHT(aka War Weight or Raw Weight)

The computer will attempt to match your clan up with another clan with similar BASE WEIGHT along with a similar WIN STREAK record, Sounds simple enough right? Well clans have learned how Clash "Weighs" their bases and have started upgrading their bases in a manner that will give them favorable matchups in war.

These are called .5 clans that use the .5 method of upgrading which means they upgrade their offenses before doing their defenses.

Then we have the extreme "weight watchers" that will upgrade their offense several levels over their defenses which we call Engineered Bases.. this is considered a form of cheating to those FairPlay players who believe we should max out and go toe-to-toe and let the best attacker win... like I do
There is tons of information for your clan to consider before jumping into a Clan War... if you want to win at a high %. There are different strategies for the entire clan, different individual attack strategies as well. There are also different ways for the entire clan to prepare for the war for each player based on how they are upgrading their base, their heroes and their troops. We have put together a collection of pages that you can access from this page to help you as a clan leader or just the low man on the totem pole... pages that show all the different attacks in the game, different ways to upgrade your base and some brief explanations on what to expect with each different strategy.

If you are new to the game and need some inspiration I would start with the Attacks 101 page. There you will see the combination of troops that have worked so well in the past. After that check out the .5 Method and Base Weight pages. These may seem like little insignificant parts of the game but they were huge factors for everyone else. Understanding what to upgrade and when is also vital in preparation for Clan Wars. If you talk to 10 people in the global chat you will probably get 9 different answers to your questions so this may be a perfect chance for you to get some of the background information under your belt so you can prevent making all of the same mistakes that those who came before you have already made!
