ORDER OF UPGRADES
WHERE TO BEGIN
DUE TO THE COMPLEXITY OF THIS TOPIC i WILL START OFF BY SAYING THAT THERE ARE MULTIPLE METHODS TO UPGRADING YOUR BASE. THE 2 MOST PROMINENT WOULD BE THE ".5 METHOD" AND THE "STANDARD METHOD". THIS PAGE WILL BRIEFLY GO OVER THE DIFFERENCES ALONG WITH SOME PROS AND CONS TO EACH METHOD
BASIC DEFINITIONS
STANDARD UPGRADING METHOD- To upgrade your Home Village as evenly as possible on both the Offensive and Defensive sides of the village.
.5 UPGRADE METHOD- To upgrade all of your Offensive parts of your Home Village like your Clan Castle, Laboratory, Spell Factory, Camps and Barracks and then to max out either select troops or all of your troops BEFORE you build or upgrade any of the defenses. Once all of the Offense is completed the Defenses will then be added to the village and brought up to the Offenses level. MORE
ENGINEERED METHOD- To Upgrade the Offense several levels above the Defense. The Engineered Method is used to gain advantages in Clan War Match ups due to the fact that on the Home Village there seems to be more emphasis on the defensive side of the base (in regards to the Clan War Match-up Algorithm) than on the Offensive side of the Home Village. MORE
BUILDER BASE- The Builder Base is the 2nd game mode in Clash of Clans. On the Builder Base, programmers of the game have had years of experience developing the Home Village and have implemented safeguards in the Builder Base game mode that discourages players from upgrading their base in an uneven manner....both the offense and defense have equal Raw Weight (also known as War Weight or Base Weight) By doing this players that upgrade their troops and not their defense will have to face other players that will have similar level troops and defenses that might match their troop levels. This will often result in the player that did not upgrade their defenses to ties or losses to players with even bases.MORE

WHAT IS "WEIGHT"
Before we go straight into the Order of Upgrades lets go over a term that's used through out this site. The term is "weight" and usually called War Weight, Raw Weight or Base Weight. Every defensive structure and every troop is assigned a number that represents its weight. These numbers from all of the defenses and troops are all added together to give your Home Village and Builder Base a specific score or weight. The computer will then use this weight to match you up with similar bases on the Builder Base mode. During Clan Wars the computer uses each player's War Weight to determine where you will be in your clan's lineup. The Heaviest player will be #1 and the Lightest will be last on your clan's side in the line up. To find an opposing clan to fight in a Clan War, the computer combines every player's War Weight that is in your clan and in the war together and uses that number as part of their Clan War Match Making algorithm. The entire formula for the match-ups are a closely guarded SuperCell secret. We can only speculate on the exact formula even though some players and some clans claim they know it all. Many, many players attempt to gain advantages in the Clan War match-up by using the .5 Upgrade Method or the Engineered Upgrade Method, some to insane extremes. One great example of the extreme measures players will take is called the Defenseless Base Method where the player will not add any defenses to their base other than the 1st Cannon.
War Weight is a very important factor to consider to anyone who participated in Clan Wars and to all of players currently enjoying the new game mode because one upgrade may influence the strength of the opposing players and clans.
ORDER OF UPGRADES FOR THE STANDARD METHOD
In the Standard Method our goal is to progress as fast as we possibly can without leaving ourselves completely vulnerable to attacks from other players. As we progress towards higher Town Hall levels the time for each upgrade increases dramatically. The skill levels of attacking players also increase as we progress towards the top as well. As we go through the Order of Upgrades please keep in mind that some players may choose to purchase all of the builders while others will not. The number of Builders available to you also increase as you move up in Town Hall level. If you plan on maxing out your Home Village I would strongly suggest doing whatever it takes to acquire all of the available Builders available for your particular Town Hall level as soon as possible.
Upgrading can get hectic very fast and may become overwhelming if you do not have a specific system worked out. The 1st key for success is to plan ahead. Keep a watchful eye on the progress of the Builders and MAKE SURE you DO NOT wait until a Builder is available before you begin to save up for the next upgrade. Sleeping Builders should give you nightmares!
ORDER OF UPGRADES FOR THE .5 METHOD
In the .5 Method there is a much different goal in mind. Keep the Base Weight as low as possible during the 1st half of every Town Hall level to minimize the pressure of the new Town Hall upgrade. The theory is that by only upgrading the offensive pieces (Troops, Clan Castle, Spell Factory, Camps, Barracks etc.) the new base will not have to deal with the elite players in that particular Town Hall level until much later on, when the defenses come out and begin their upgrade process. The .5 Method has been tried and tested with great success and if kept with the guidelines of the .5 (which means that the player DOES bring all of the new defenses out for that TH level and DOES upgrade all of those defenses to max for that level, just at the end of the upgrade instead of the beginning like the Standard Method) the Fairplay community will not frown upon that base and the player that it is held by. Keep in mind if a player decides to upgrade Town Hall once all of the troops are maxed out and offenses are completed without adding the new defenses or upgrading the existing defenses then that base will begin to enter the Engineered status. The Engineered status is not widely accepted in the Fairplay community and would not be considered to take part in organized tournaments and Fairplay leagues.

Many players enjoy great success using the .5 Method once their offenses and troops have reached max level for their new TH level. So much success in some cases that players prolong their time in that level. Nickname like Perma9 and Always8s have popped up for these players. My suggestion for anyone wanting to use the .5 Method is to constantly reassess your ability to attack and defend and as soon as you are able to attack maxed bases in your Town Hall level with consistent success than you are ready to bring out your new defenses and upgrade the .5 base to the full version of the base. Keep pushing forward. There is a reason that I have this opinion too... this game has a feature that most players look forward to... the newest CoC Update! I see many players complain that the latest update left their Town Hall level behind and did not offer up any new content for them and on this subject I heard the most perfect remark. "If you are a TH9 then the newest content for you is waiting in TH10 and TH11" The updates focus on TH11 because the developers are on this mission to bring new and exciting content to their players. If they add to TH9 then all TH10 and 11 players will not get the full benefit from the update but if they add to TH11 ALL players will get to enjoy the new content even if many players have to work for months following the update to get their bases from TH10 to TH11 to appreciate the new content!

As you look over this chart keep in mind that using the .5 Method players are trying to keep their Raw Weight down to a minimum even after the decide to add and upgrade the defenses. This means that instead of starting out with the costly (and heavy in regards to War Weight... if you forgot Base, War and Raw Weight are all different names for the same thing) splash defenses they will start out with the Single Target defenses. There is a compromise to this method too! Your base will NOT be as strong on defense until all of the defenses are out and maxed. Using this method has been a great way to HELP in war match-ups but there is no garentee. There is still a chance that you get matched with another player of the same TH level with the same level troops as your base but they have all of their defenses out and you do not... Advantage Bad Guys.
ORDER OF UPGRADES FOR THE DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDREL, CHEATING *SS ENGINEERED METHOD
As you can tell by the title of this section, this is not the author's (EZE from Damage Inc) favorite method. In fact this method has caused quite a bit of a commotion in the FairPlay community and through out the CoC Gaming community in general. There is an old saying that I like to refer to in cases like this, "if you have to cheat to win is it really worth playing?" This being said it should be known that there may be a fine line between parts of the .5 Method and the Engineered Method. To clarify by definition a .5 base in one that upgrades their offense at the beginning of every new Town Hall level, followed by their defenses at the end of every new Town Hall level. In many cases players will choose to leave a level of their walls in an underdeveloped state as well. The Engineered Method encourages players to ONLY upgrade the offenses and Resource Buildings, allowing their defenses to fall behind more than one complete TH level, The extreme Engineered Base is called a defenseless base. This is when one 1 Cannon is built and is often left as level 1. A normal Engineered base may have maxed troops for TH10 but maxed defenses for TH7. So whats the big difference between the .5 Method and the Engineered Method? There is a lot of differences if you look close enough! The first is that the offense is MORE than one Town Level ahead of the defenses. The most common will be to build the Single Target defenses and not build any Area Splash Damage defenses like the Mortar of Wizard Tower. The evidence of an engineered base will always come in Clan Wars. If your clan has a TH7 at their number 30 spot and their clan has a TH11 with maxed Heroes, Teslas and Air Defenses only in that same 30 spot then you have an Engineered base on your hands!
Due to the controversial content that a chart of "how to make and Engineered Base" would surely be, we have decided against making one with the full detail. Instead this chart is more "what to look for" and "how to overcome" an Engineered Base in a Clan War. Hope this helps someone!
