This was a very difficult section for us. There are so many different systems and concepts on the appropriate way to upgrade you base that it's hard to say for sure which one is best. What we will attempt to is instead of going through piece by piece.. upgrade this one now etc. we will give you a foundation to build off of. Why would you upgrade certain things before others? Why not upgrade Town Hall (TH) before you max out your defenses? Lets start with off with YOU. Ask yourself, am I an every once and a while player? Am I an everyday Player. Is my overall goal to have a maxed out TH11 or do I simply play a couple of attacks per week for the fun of it?

These guidelines are for the everyday player who wants to maximize their productivity per day. This game is pretty simple. Its all about resource hunting (farming) to give you the necessary resources to build and upgrade your base and then to ultimately defend your base against the Clash World. To do this you need to farm, build and upgrade it's that simple. So 1st thing 1st, you need to FARM LIKE ITS A BUSINESS. Keep a watchful eye on how much your army costs to build (it lists the army cost in the "quick train" page inside the army training page in-game) and then only attack bases that you can turn a profit! Use the NEXT button as frequently as necessary and only attack bases that will put Gold and Elixir into your Storages after the attack. (We have seen too many successful 3 star farming raids that cost the person 80K in Elixir but they got 40K in Elixir for the raid. THEY LOST LOOT!!)

Now that you understand how important it is to make a profit on each farming raid its time to think about YOUR base. In order to upgrade your base you will need to use your builders. You will start off with 2 builders and then you must purchase each builder after that to a maximum of 5 builders. Builders are the only item bought with GEMS in the game for a reason. They are the MOST IMPORTANT piece in the game if you want to try to reach TH11 in your lifetime! You can earn Gems by completing achievements throughout the process of the game (and by building the Gem Mine on your Builder Base) but its very difficult to get the final 2 Builders Huts at a whopping cost of 1000 and then 2000 gems each. This is the only time and part of the game that I would suggest purchasing the gems and then buying the Builders Huts with the Gems. Time is money and the extra Builders Huts will save you so much time that they will be worth it in the long run. That being said, the 2nd rule for upgrading (1st being to turn a profit when farming) is to NEVER allow a Builder to sit for more than 24 hours. If a sitting Builders Hut does not literally give you nightmares that you need to go back to playing Mario Brothers. LOL don't do that just keep those Builders going at all times, please do it for me if not for yourself! YOU MUST PLAN FOR YOUR UPGRADES!!! Farm and build up your Gold, Elixir and Dark Elixir BEFORE the Builder is done with their current upgrade.

3rd rule to upgrading involves a word that gets thrown around alot in the Clash World. This term is attached to those players who do not upgrade their troops, buildings and defenses before they upgrade their Town Hall. Its called RUSHING and it's the biggest mistake you can make in this game. For example if you just upgraded to TH3, you still have TH2 defenses etc. You will notice that other TH3 players will farm your base with ease. Their troops are stronger than your defenses it's that simple. The 1st thing everyone wants to do is get more Walls and more Defenses to protect themselves. You will learn quite quickly that when you upgrade your TH you get alot of new toys to put on your base so it's an attractive upgrade to complete, realizing that you desperately need stronger defenses. The problem occurs when you upgrade to TH4 to gain the extra walls and defenses you no longer have to deal with Th3 players farming you, you have TH4 players farming you! Now your getting beat up in every raid because they have TH4 troops and you have TH2 defenses! DO NOT get caught up in this no win cycle. This is Rushing and rushed bases are everyone's favorite target. NEVER upgrade Town Hall before all of your troops, buildings and defenses are maxed out for that level. You will know that they are maxed if you see a red bar across the bottom on the screen when you click on the upgrade button on that particular item. You NEED time to build your troops, upgrade them and learn how to use them properly before you even think about upgrading your TH. There are so many different combinations of troops and different tactics to learn and use that it will take you a good bit of time to figure all out of the little things that mean so much in this game.

Now that we covered the main 3 rules of C.O.C upgrading (#1 always farm for a profit #2 never let a builder sit idol #3 don't rush your TH upgrade) we can begin to lay down the foundation of upgrading. Here are a few quick pointers:
#1 assign builders to specific jobs and keep them there
#2 never wait until a builder is free to start farming for the resources necessary for the upgrade
#3 upgrade with Gold and Elixir evenly.
#4 don't upgrade similar defensive pieces at the same time
#5 always move forward. never get stuck catching up (we'll get into this more later)
#6 pay attention to the cost of the defensive piece it will tell you how important it is

We have put together several charts to help you make key decisions on what to upgrade and when. There are 3 completely different "methods" that most players will use. One we call the Standard Method. This is when you upgrade everything as evenly as possible keeping your village as strong as possible at all times. The second is called the .5 Method and it is when players upgrade all of their offensive pieces in each new Town Hall level first and then catch up the defenses after their offense is maxed out. This allows players a small cushion at the beginning of each new level due to the fact that the computer likes to match us up based on our defenses (mainly for Clan War match-ups) This is NOT for the Builder Base either. The .5 Method is only for your Home Village. We get into that much more on the following page. The final way to upgrade is one that I was honestly considering leaving out of this guide because it does NOT fall into the "FairPlay" guide lines and I, along with most other FairPlay advocates consider this method a form of cheating. It is called the Engineered Method and it is when players upgrade their offenses more then a complete level further than their defenses. It is a way to trick the Clan War algorithm into thinking that the base is much weaker than it actually is. We included the Engineered Method in this guide not to influence players to use this system but to warn and prepare them for an inevitable encounter with them.
WARNING- If your going to upgrade your base following this or any other strategy guide, be sure to read all of the information before you begin. There are tons of differences between the standard and .5 method of upgrading and if you get caught somewhere in the middle it can really hurt your progress. These 2 methods especially... they are the complete opposite of eachother... one you add your toip defenses 1st and the other you wait until the end of the TH Level to add them so if you do not fully understand the concepts and upgrade orders you can do more harm then good. You have gone through quite a bit of material to get to this point so be sure to read everything on your favorite method before you begin!
