EZE'S GUIDE TO THE SKELETON TRAP
Skeleton Traps are available at TH8. They are not seen by the attacker until they get within 5 tiles of the trap and then out comes Barry! (Larry's Cousin BTW) Skeleton Traps can be set to air or ground so be sure to pay close attention to what troops are the most commonly used against you and set the trap to defend in that manner. For example in TH8 there are lots of Dragon attacks so you may want to set them to air where in TH9 (also depending on your base design) you may see more ground attacks as your Air Defenses start to become extremely strong. DO NOT let anyone tell you that the Skeleton Trap is a useless trap! It may be one of the most versatile traps there is! But,the location and lvl. of your Skeleton Trap is key.
Setting your Skeleton Trap- There are 2 major factors
when determining where to place your trap(s). 1st is for
attacking incoming troops and 2nd is to delay troops. To
attack troops like the Hog Rider, which is one of their
favorite targets.. if you base it on how effective they are,
you would want to place the trap close to the outer
Walls. By doing this you will prolong the attacking
troops exposure to the Skeletons and they will do the
most damage. To delay troops you will place the traps in
the core or wherever your main concentration of
defenses are. For example players with all 4
Hidden Tesla Towers (Known as a Tesla Farm)
in the core of their base surrounding Town Hall
would place their Skeleton Traps in the middle of all of the Teslas so when the attacking troops get close to the Teslas the trap is sprung and now attacking troops have to clear the Skeletons while the Teslas are pounding on them. Heavy, slow attacking troops like the P.E.K.K.A. are most effected by this tactic because it takes several seconds for her to wind up and swing, all the while she is getting hammered by the 4 Tesla Towers.
When selecting the Air Skeleton Traps (to be triggered by air troops) consideration to the location of the trap is still key. Move the trap in towards the core to keep them out of harms way until the attacking troops get into the base a little more. Why? That's simple, when an air army attacks there will be troops that can easily dispose of the floating Skeletons but as they get into the base a little further the troops thin out and other defense only troops like the Balloon will start to separate themselves from their counterpart troops. The key to achieving a high success rate with the Skeleton Trap is to find a location that gives you the highest percentage of your Skeletons being sprung into action be a defense only troop. As we all know a defense only troop will not fight back when being attacked by defending troops so they are the primary targets.
When attacking a base with any attack that has a focus on the clean up stage of the attack and is heavy with Balloons or Hog Riders a careful consideration should be in order to help prevent the defending base's Skeleton Traps from ruining your attack. I have seen too many fantastic Hog raids that ended prematurely because they triggered 2-3 Skeleton Traps and had no plan for them.. Hogs get ATE UP by the Skeletons! Plan for that by bringing a Poison Spell or some other helpful spell/ troop to keep something so small (2-12 Skeletons) from having such a BIG impact on your attack!

Advanced Skelly Tactics

I want to go over a few of the previous points with a little more detail because if the Skeleton Traps should really be thought about as a big asset and not just another little speed bump. They are extremely effective in these specific applications. Two elite attacks are the LaLoon and the GoHo. They both have several variations but the rely on the Balloons and Hog Riders to do the majority of the work. Both the Hogs and Loons are extremely vulnerable to the Skelly Traps. As a defender what you need to accomplish is a false sense of security. That's where these types of traps do the most damage to the attacker. The Hog attacks are alot simpler to set up so we can quickly go over that one 1st. What you want to do is think like the attacker for a minute. If you were going to use Hogs on a base what and where would you attack from? For starters you would avoid dropping the Hogs in areas of the base where there are a lot of empty spaces, that's where the Giant Bombs could be so that's where an attack would try to utilize their Kill Squad. They would want to spawn the Hogs on defenses that are grouped fairly close together without any double spaces in between them so, that's where you will want to place the ground Skeleton Traps. Intentionally build one corner of the base that looks strong, it has defenses with a couple of Storages protecting them without any spaces for the Spring Traps of Giant Bombs to hide. Then you add the Skeleton Trap(s) along the outer wall leading to that perfect landing zone for the Hog Riders. It will take some trial and error but its fun to build a base with the specific intention to allow your opponent to drop troops right where YOU want them too.
The LaLoon is a little trickier to trap because the target for
the Skeleton is the Balloon and the Balloon is always dropped
in to the map right behind the Lava Hound. You want to try
to avoid allowing the Lava Hound from triggering the Skeleton
Trap because they have such high HP. To do this takes a
little planning, a little extra thought and a little luck too.
Remember their are no obstacles in the air to direct the air
troops towards or away from your traps so you need to be
very carefull with this placement. Again we are going to think
like the attacker. They are going to drop 2-4 Lava Hounds on to the map and they will head in a straight path towards the Air Defenses. Good attackers will start their Lava Hounds off in what you may think to be odd places far away from the Air Defenses but this is to distract the defenses and have them target the Lava Hound on its way towards the Air Defenses. Then they will drop the Balloons on top of the distracted defenses. What you will want to do is place a Mortar and a Cannon with 1 tile separating them outside of any direct path from the outer walls to the Air Defenses. The attacker, even the great attackers will not try to path the Lava Hound near those two defenses because nether one will be able to shoot into the air at either the the Hound or Loons. They will also be a prime candidate for the Balloon portion of the raid for the same reason, they can't defend themselves from an air raid. Be sure to include one Air Bombs in with the Skeleton Traps just in case the attacker decides to use a few Minions to take out the Mortar and Cannon. Now if things go as planned the attacker will drop Lava Hounds, they will path far enough away as not to set off the Skeleton Trap. Then as they begin the Balloon portion of the raid they will drop several Balloons on top of those sitting ducts, the Mortar and Cannon. Seconds later... out of their hiding spot, deep in the ground come the air-bound Skelly Traps and there they are chopping away at the Balloons completely uncontested.
I know this is a lot to absorb and process especially if you are new to the game but the 1st main point is to emphasize the importance of the little things, like the Skeleton Trap.By taking the extra time and preparations you can strengthen the overall defensive posture of your base significantly!
